The Red Sox have made a number of changes to their roster over the last day – especially when it comes to their pitching staff. The team is at double-digit transactions over the last 24 hours, with a game sandwiched in the middle.

This sequence of moves began on Wednesday evening. A day after allowing four runs in three innings in a relief appearance, Corey Kluber was placed on the 15-day IL with right shoulder inflammation. To fill his spot on the roster the Red Sox called up 25-year-old infielder David Hamilton to make his MLB debut. The Red Sox’s 25th-ranked prospect appeared in Wednesday night’s game as a pinch-runner, and stole a base and scored a run.

• It was a quick turnaround for the Red Sox, who played a getaway day game against the Twins in Minnesota on Thursday afternoon. Prior to the game, the team made five roster moves.

  The most notable of the five was placing catcher Reese McGuire on the 10-day IL after he suffered a right oblique strain on Wednesday night. They then called up catcher Caleb Hamilton to replace McGuire as the second catcher on the roster. The team also placed Alex Verdugo on the Bereavement List.

  Additionally, the Red Sox called up reliever Brandon Walter to make his MLB debut. Walter, a 26th-round pick by the Red Sox in 2019, pitched 6.2 innings in relief in Thursday’s game following opener Justin Garza. Walter allowed three runs on six hits. To make room for Walter on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox moved shortstop Yu Chang to the 60-day IL.

  Chang has been out since mid-April with a hand injury.

• Walter’s initial stay with the Red Sox was a short one. Following Thursday’s game he was optioned back to Worcester. In his place the team called up Chris Murphy, who made him MLB debut with the team earlier this month. During Murphy’s first MLB stint, he didn’t allow a run in six innings over two relief appearances.

  Finally, the Red Sox made a trade on Thursday as well. They acquired relief pitcher Tayler Scott from the Dodgers in exchange for cash considerations. The 31-year-old righty appeared in six games for the Dodgers this year, allowing six runs in six innings. He previously pitched for the Mariners, Orioles, and Padres.

  Scott, who was DFA’ed by the Dodgers earlier this week, still has minor league options available. That means the Red Sox can either keep him on their roster, or send him down to Triple-A Worcester once he arrives. In order to make room for Scott on the 40-man roster for Scott, the Red Sox moved John Schreiber to the 60-day IL.

  With all these transactions in the books, the Red Sox return to action on Friday to begin a three-game series in Chicago against the White Sox. Brayan Bello will get the start for the Sox in that game.
