  • Last month, the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s coach/contributor committee named Patriots owner Robert Kraft one of 12 finalists for their nomination for the Hall’s Class of 2023. However, Kraft’s bid will have to wait. On Wednesday, the committee announced former Chargers head coach Don Coryell as its nominee.

Kraft will now go back on the ballot next year. Unlike the main voting process, there is no limit to the number of times individuals can be nominated as contributors.

  • Kraft, who had been a Patriots season ticket holder in 1971, first became involved with the team professionally in 1988 when he purchased Sullivan Stadium. He went on to buy the team in 1994. Under his ownership, the Patriots have made 10 trips to the Super Bowl, winning six. Kraft has also been a key player in league politics in his time as owner, notably helping put an end to the 2011 lockout.

There are currently 15 former team owners in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Longtime Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones was the last to be inducted, that was in 2017.

Kraft wasn’t the only former Patriot nominated by the coach/contributor committee this year. Frank ‘Bucko’ Kilroy was also included on the list. Kilroy joined the Patriots in 1971 and remained with the organization in a number of front office roles until his death in 2007.
