  • The Patriots have played most of this season without running back/wide receiver Ty Montgomery, who was placed on IR with an undisclosed injury following Week 1. Not much had been heard about Montgomery’s status since, but on Wednesday afternoon Jim McBride of The Boston Globe reported Montgomery will be out for the remainder of the year after undergoing shoulder surgery.

Signed back in March, Montgomery had a successful preseason and seemed to be the favorite to replace James White – who retired during training camp – as the Patriots’ primary passing-down back. Montgomery then suffered an ankle injury in the team’s preseason finale, which some logically assumed was aggravated in the opener, leading to his IR placement. As it turns out, that was not the case.

  • While Montgomery won’t play again this season, his time in New England isn’t necessarily over. The 29-year-old signed a two-year contract in the spring, and is still under team control next season with a cap hit of $1.9 million.

With Montgomery not in the lineup, second-year back Rhamondre Stevenson has taken on a dual role as the team’s main early-down and passing-down back. Through nine games he’s the team’s leading rusher with 129 carries for 618 yards, but is also second on the team with 35 catches for 227 yards. His 845 all-purpose yards are also a team-high.
