  • Now that initial roster cuts have cleared waivers, NFL teams can start building their practice squads. Teams can sign up to 16 players to their practice squad, although there are limitations on the amount of veterans each team can keep.

Some players sign with the practice squads right away, while others may take their time to see if they can sign on a team’s 53-man roster. The news will trickle in throughout the day, but here’s a running list of updates regarding the Patriots.

  • Practice fills in the rest of the picture

The Patriots had 16 non-rostered players present at practice, with that group likely being the initial practice squad. Of course, the team can make changes to this group throughout the season. The practice squad is usually fluid, especially early in the year.

  • Bill Murray gets third season on the practice squad

Bill Murray appears set to return for what will be his third season on the Patriots’ practice squad. Murray made the move from the defensive line to the offensive line this summer.

  • Initial practice squad signings for the Patriots

Lil’Jordan Humphrey highlights the initial list of players the Patriots are bringing back after letting go yesterday. With Tyquan Thornton expected to miss the start of the season, he’ll offer wide receiver depth. The same goes for J.J. Taylor, who could see time if Ty Montgomery’s injury is serious.

After getting beat out by rookie sixth-round pick Chasen Hines for the backup guard spot, veteran James Ferentz and UDFA Kody Russey return. Russey in particular impressed this summer.

McGrone was seen as somewhat of a surprise cut given the hype that built up around him in the spring. He’ll get another year in New England to refine his game after a 2020 ACL tear.

  • Devin Asiasi doesn’t clear waivers

Only one player the Patriots waived ended up being claimed, with Devin Asiasi heading to Cincinnati. The Patriots – who sit 21st in priority on the waiver wire, weren’t awarded any claims of there own.
