To start Day 3 of the NFL Draft, the Patriots used three of their first four picks on offensive linemen. On Tuesday, they officially signed the first of the three.

As first reported by NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Patriots have officially agreed to terms with guard Atonio Mafi from UCLA. Mafi was the Patriots’ lone fifth-round pick, and was selected 144th overall.

  • As a rookie, Mafi gets a standard four-year contract from the Patriots. The deal is worth up to $4.2 million with a $335,540 signing bonus. In 2023, Mafi’s cap hit will be $833,885, and will grow to a max of $1.2 million in the fourth and final year of the deal in 2026.

Mafi, 23, comes into the NFL with plenty of experience. At UCLA he appeared in a school record 56 games with 30 starts. During that time primarily played left guard, but spent significant time at right guard in 2021. He’s expected to compete for a backup guard spot as a rookie, and may be insurance for the team at right guard if they can’t retain current starter Michael Onwenu, who is entering a contract year.

The Patriots have now signed two of their 12 draft picks from last month’s draft. Sixth-round wide receiver Kayshon Boutte signed his deal at the end of last week.
