  • Prior to today’s season opener against the Miami Dolphins, the Patriots announced the seven players that will be inactive for the game. They are quarterback Bailey Zappe, running back Pierre Strong, offensive lineman Chasen Hines, defensive lineman Sam Roberts, linebacker Anfernee Jennings, and defensive backs Joshuah Bledsoe and Shaun Wade.

Jennings being inactive is the biggest surprise from  that group. The third-year outside linebacker had a strong summer, and seemed poised to play at least a rotational role on the edge for the Patriots.

  • Perhaps just is surprising is one of the Patriots’ players not included on the inactive list – running back/wide receiver Ty Montgomery. Montgomery suffered an ankle injury in the Patriots’ final preseason game against the Raiders, then missed a week of practice. He returned to the field this week but was limited. With Montgomery able to go, rookie running back Pierre Strong won’t dress.

As for the other players who appeared on the injury report this week, Jakobi Meyers (knee) and Isaiah Wynn (back) are both active, although Meyers was seen wearing a knee brace before the game. Bledsoe (groin) and Wade (ankle) will sit.

  • The Patriots will have extra depth at both wide receiver and linebacker. On Saturday, the team elevated wideout Lil’Jordan Humphrey and linebacker/coverage specialist Harvey Langi from the practice squad.

As for the Dolphins, two former Patriots are on their inactive list in linebacker Trey Flowers and cornerback Eric Rowe. Cornerback Noah Igbinoghene, a 2020 first-round pick, is also inactive.
