The New England Patriots are signing 24-year-old wide receiver Lynn Bowden Jr. to their practice squad. ESPN’s Field Yates was first to report the news Thursday.
Bowden becomes the third wide receiver to sign to the Patriots’ practice squad, joining Tre Nixon and Lil’Jordan Humphrey. He was previously with the Miami Dolphins, playing 10 games and catching 28 passes in 2020 before spending all of 2021 on injured reserve.
Originally a third-round selection of the Raiders in the 2020 NFL Draft, Bowden was traded along with a sixth-round pick from Las Vegas to Miami for a fourth-round pick.

The third-year pro has a level of versatility that must excite Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick. Bowden played both receiver and quarterback in his junior year at Kentucky, and functioned as both a passing-down back and Wildcat QB at times. In 2019 at Kentucky, Bowden made 30 catches, 185 rushing attempts, and 74 passing attempts, and scored 17 combined rushing, receiving, and passing touchdowns in 13 games.
Bowden was also an elite return man at Kentucky, averaging 22.9 yards per kick return and 22.1 yards per punt return, with two return touchdowns.
If anything, Bowden will be a useful piece for the scout team, to help the Patriots secondary get ready for Miami wideouts Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and Cedrick Wilson. They also drafted Erik Ezukanma in the fourth round of the 2022 draft. Hill is also likely the primary punt returner for the Dolphins.
At receiver, it’s still more likely that Humphrey is elevated to the main roster any time soon, over Bowden or Nixon. The Patriots are expected to place rookie wideout Tyquan Thornton on injured reserve, which will open a roster spot.
The Patriots and Dolphins will meet to officially kick off their 2022 regular seasons on Sept. 11 at Hard Rock Stadium. We’ll continue to keep you updated on the team here at 985TheSportsHub.com.
