The New England Patriots drafted 10 players total in the 2022 NFL Draft this weekend. In the process, they addressed a number of roster needs, with at least a few players likely to contribute right away.
Two clear spots should be filled by rookies this year: guard, and punt returner. First-round pick Cole Strange will almost certainly start at one of the guard spots right away, while third-round pick Marcus Jones has the speed and skill set to immediately replace Gunner Olszewski on punts and possibly return kicks as well.
The team also addressed long-term needs at wide receiver, cornerback, and tackle. Additionally, New England’s 2022 draft class included two running backs and a defensive lineman, shoring up depth at those spots. Speed was a theme, as the Patriots selected the player with the fastest 40-time at both receiver and running back.
