Well, here we go! The first October weekend is here, and it’s time to pack the kids in the car for their most boring ride ever (to them!)  People from across the country pay big money to come here to see what we have in our own backyard. To find New England’s BEST foliage, we have to look to our weather pal, Terry at WBZ-TV for his expert analysis of where to see the most beautiful Fall foliage, this time of the year

MA/NH/ME/CT

Terry says:

The most important factor in getting a good foliage season is the weather.  It is critical that you get lots of warm, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. That is essentially what sparks the whole process. As the days start getting shorter and the temperatures get colder, the chlorophyll in the leaves begins to break down. If this process is gradual and undisturbed by things like unseasonably warm or cold weather or say a hurricane, then, in most cases, you get a pretty nice foliage season.

Looking at the current foliage status, we see pretty much what we would expect for late September. Color is starting to come on in parts of Western MA, Vermont, and northern New Hampshire and Maine. The only areas of moderate to high color are in the higher elevations of the Green and White Mountains.

Leaf Peeping Tours

Let’s say, you want to make this an event, there are many New England tours you can search for.  For example the Berkshire Scenic Railway has a leaf peeping tour on a train. It features a professional narration on the ride. It was voted one of the Top 10 foliage train rides in New England.

So, grab your coffee, let’s hop in the virtual Jaybeau station wagon and find New England’s best foliage! Below are some idea starters, and the timelines for best viewing!
