We all have our favorite spots. Maybe your leaf peeping takes you to the cranberry bogs of Southeastern, Massachusetts. Maybe you like the ride up 93 into New Hampshire. Perhaps you are a fan of the Green Mountains of Vermont. Travel +Leisure, the top travel publication in the country, has come up with a list of their own.

Most of us don’t like saying goodbye to the carefree casualness of summer. But it’s time to get the sweaters out of storage and embrace pumpkin spice season. The best part of Fall, here in New England,  is the vibrant colors of the changing leaves, and the crispness of a new day, and a new season. So time to hit the road and go exploring. Lucky for us, we don’t have to travel far, the colors will be everywhere around us, in all 6 New England States.

Travel + Leisure’s list includes 21 destinations around the country. Of those 21, there are 5 New England spots the pulication highly recommends for a day trip or a weekend. Autumn adventures await. • Bar Harbor, Maine

  As popular a destination as Bar Harbor is in the summer, autumn may be even busier. The town is ridiculously charming, there’s plenty to do on land and sea. But what you really need to see is the foliage!

• Cape Cod, Massachusetts

  You may have just come off your summer vacation on the Cape. Most of us don’t think to go in the Fall, but Travel + Leisure says, “leaf-peeping tourists are also well aware of its autumnal charms. Visitors can check out a cranberry bog or go pumpkin picking as well as see the beautiful changing colors of the Northeast.”

• Lenox, Massachusetts

  It’s like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting. Well, he was from the Berkshires. The quintesential New England town is the perfect setting for a Fall getaway. Travel + Leisure suggests we “Hike or bike to Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary around mid-October to see the beautifully vivid colors.”

• North Conway, New Hampshire

  With more than 34 miles to travel along the Kancamagus Highway, there’s no shortage of scenery in North Conway. This town is “Tucked within the White Mountain National Forest,” and offers plent of hiking, rock climbing and restaurants for everyone.

• Stowe, Vermont

  Did you know Stowe is called “Fall’s Color Capital?” I just learned that too. Thanks Travel + Leisure. The publication also noted,”it’s a spectacular place to hike and ride. Even if the Vermont weather gets chilly, you can take a scenic drive along the Mount Mansfield Auto Toll Road.”
