Late night report adds clarity to Mac Jones’ status for Sunday

A late-night tweet on Saturday night added clarity to the status of Patriots starting quarterback Mac Jones as he works his way back from an ankle injury.

Will he play, or won't he? That's been the talk around Mac Jones all week, as the Patriots' quarterback continues to work his way back from a high ankle sprain he suffered in Week 3. He's missed the last two games, and was listed as 'out' and 'doubtful' on the final injury report of those weeks.

Given that, there was some optimism for Jones' return this week in Cleveland given he was labeled as 'questionable' on the final injury report on Friday. That optimism increased when he wasn't ruled out along with wide receiver Nelson Agholor (hamstring) and cornerback Jonathan Jones (ankle) earlier in the day on Saturday.

However, now it looks as though Jones may not be ready for this Week 7 matchup. According to a tweet from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport late Saturday night, "it's highly unlikely he [Jones] plays" against the Browns despite being listed as questionable.

With Jones likely out, the Patriots will once again turn to rookie fourth-round pick Bailey Zappe. Zappe made his first career start last week, and completed 17-of-21 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown in a 29-0 win over the Detroit Lions.

As for Jones, focus on his return now turns towards next week's home game against the Chicago Bears. That game is on Monday Night Football, so it gives Jones an extra day to get ready, while also not having to deal with a flight in the leadup to the game.
