In Saugus, Massachusetts, the Kowloon Restaurant is more than just a place to eat – it’s a lively world of Asian flavors, charm and a staple of route 1. Established in 1950 by the Wong family, this restaurant offers a captivating dining experience with an extravagant atmosphere and a diverse menu spanning Szechuan, Cantonese, Sushi, Thai, and Polynesian cuisines.

But the Kowloon wasn’t always known as the Kowloon. The restaurant Originally was named The Mandarin House and opened in 1950 in an ice cream parlor. In 1958, the Wong family took over, renaming it the Kowloon Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge. Over five decades, they expanded into a bustling complex with five additions, accommodating up to 1,200 customers.

When you Step inside, you’ll discover this is no regular restaurant… to some, It’s like Disney World! With themed rooms like Tiki Lagoon and Volcano Bay, it creates a kitschy Polynesian wonderland. The menu, resembling a treasure map of culinary, tempts your taste buds with delights like Pad Thai and the Special Kowloon Treasure.

But the Kowloon isn’t just about food; it’s a stage for laughter! Kowloon Komedy features nationally-known acts, turning your dining experience into entertainment. Amid lively community gatherings, the Kowloon serves as a local hub where conversations flow freely.

And during the pandemic, the Kowloon adapted heroically, introducing takeout and delivery. In a grand reopening on June 25, the restaurant transformed its parking lot into a drive-in movie theater and carhop, featuring a grand opening concert with The Platters.

The Kowloon Restaurant is a flavorful odyssey, not just for its delicious Asian cuisine but for the vibrant atmosphere. Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer, get ready for a journey filled with charm, culinary wonders, and memories that linger long after the last bite.

    Kowloon over 50 years, evolving from a modest dining room for 40-50 customers to a sprawling complex with five additions, accommodating up to 1,200 patrons.  larger-than-life and vibrant interior reminiscent of a Chinese restaurant version of Las Vegas.

    Nationally-known comedians have performed at the Kowloon Komedy, turning an already great dining experience into a better one filled with laughter.

  • 6. The Kowloon Carhop/outdoor area

    The Kowloon transformed the parking lot into a drive-in movie theater and carhop during. If there was any good that came out of COVID, it was the carhop! Obviously, it’s not open during the winter months, but he place is buzzing during the summer time!

    Andy Wong presence adds a genuine and familial atmosphere, with sincere interactions and a commitment to treating customers like the most important people in the world.

    Almost everybody, including myself, has a piece of Kowloon merch and wears the hoodies on a regular basis. Not only because of our love for the legendary restaurant, but it also just makes us super cool.
