Jeremy Swayman continues to make a strong case for playoff minutes.

The Bruins goaltender stopped 31 of 32 shots in Thursday night’s overtime win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. He also faced 14 high-danger scoring chances, and all but one were kept out of the net. But Swayman was especially impressive in one particular aspect, which is highlighted in the below video.

  • That would be rebounds and second-chance opportunities. Most notably, Swayman stopped Auston Matthews on three rebound attempts, including a chance at the doorstep with a minute and a half left in the third period. The Leafs had six rebound attempts as a team, and Swayman was there to stop all of them.

Second-chance opportunities and quick shots from the slot area had started to go in a little more lately against both Bruins goaltenders. It’s never ideal to have to make saves on high-danger attempts in the first place, and so the hope is the B’s can tighten up their defense and keep opponents more to the outside. But it was a great sign to see Swayman sharp and ready to make the stops he needed in those critical moments.

  • “Just wanted to do my job,” Swayman said. “The defense did a great job clearing rebounds if there was one, and I just wanted to stay between my posts and if they did get a rebound, be in front of it.”

For Swayman, Thursday represented a nice rebound (pun intended, I guess) from allowing three goals on 24 shots last Saturday against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Bruins have now won six of his starts in a row.

Linus Ullmark still projects as the Bruins’ starting goalie to begin the playoffs. But as long as Swayman keeps playing the way he is at the moment, the B’s will feel good about going to him in net if they have to.
