Boston Celtics

  • Jaylen Brown scored a season-high 36 points for the shorthanded Celtics, who beat the Washington Wizards 130-121 without Jayson Tatum on Sunday at TD Garden.

Brown topped his previous season-high scoring output by one point, besting his 35-point effort against the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2022-23 season opener. He shot 13-for-23 from the field (56.5 percent) and 8-for-8 from the free-throw line, and closed strong with six points in the final 2:39 of regulation.

The Celtics also got key scoring contributions off the bench from Malcolm Brogdon (17 points), Sam Hauser (14 points), and Luke Kornet (12 points). They were able to hold off the Wizards despite their 55 percent team shooting percentage and 51 combined points for Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis.

Tatum was out for the first time all season after appearing on the injury report for each of the Celtics’ last three games. He played through the injury against Dallas and Sacramento on Wednesday and Friday, but on Sunday ended up sitting for the first time all season.
