The Celtics’ Jaylen Brown will have to wait a bit longer to find out if he’s finally an All-NBA talent, but on Wednesday night, the Boston superstar was rewarded with one of the highest honors the organization can present a player as he was honored as the team’s Red Auerbach Award winner for the 2022-23 season.

Introduced in 2006, the award is awarded annually to the Celtics player or coach who “best exemplifies the spirit of what it means to be a Celtic through exceptional performance on and off the court.”

  • Brown was presented with the award by Celtics lead owner and governor Wyc Grousbeck prior to the team’s Atlantic-clinching victory over the Raptors.

“Jaylen has proved that not only can you be a great basketball player, but you can be an important role model in the Boston community and off the court,” Grousbeck said. “ His qualities demonstrate what it means to be a part of this organization and make us stronger as a group.”

  • “Extremely grateful,” Brown said of winning the award. “I think Red Auerbach had a vision for this organization and so many years later, seeing that vision still being maintained, I think, is amazing. And I’m grateful to be a part of it, especially when you’re highlighting things that don’t have anything to do with stats or analytics.

“Receiving an award for something that you don’t necessarily see some type of value for, that doesn’t show up in the stat sheet, I appreciate stuff like that. I’ve put my everything into this team, I’ve put my everything into this city, into this organization since I’ve been here. To get that award, I thought meant a lot. I was grateful.”

  • The 26-year-old Brown, who put up 25 points in Wednesday’s win over Toronto, is averaging career-highs in points (26.6), rebounds (6.9), and assists (3.5) per game this season.

Brown is also the 16th different player or coach to earn the honor since it was first introduced in 2006.

Previous recipients include Paul Pierce (2006, 2013), Al Jefferson (2007), Kevin Garnett (2008, 2012), Ray Allen (2009), Rajon Rondo (2010), Doc Rivers (2011), Brandon Bass (2014), Avery Bradley (2015), Isaiah Thomas (2016), Al Horford (2017), Kyrie Irving (2018), Marcus Smart (2019), Kemba Walker (2020), Jayson Tatum (2021) and Robert Williams III (2022).
