Felger & Mazz

Greg Bedard of BostonSportsJournal.com joined the Felger and Mazz program on Tuesday, as he does every week to discuss the Patriots and the NFL games from the past week. While on, Greg Bedard did his weekly “10 Questions” segment on the program following week 14 of the 2023 NFL season…

Before the 10 questions, here’s some notes from around the NFL….

The Philadelphia Eagles lost their 3rd consecutive game on Monday Night Football to the Seattle Seahawks. The Eagles started the season 10-1 and have now fallen to 10-4 on the season.

The San Francisco 49ers currently have the best record in the NFC with an 11-3 record. The Baltimore Ravens currently lead the AFC with the same 11-3 record.

A total of 6 teams have been eliminated from playoff contention through week 15 of the NFL season. In the AFC the New England Patriots, New York Jets, and Tennessee Titans have been eliminated, while in the NFC the Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, and Washington Commanders have all been eliminated.

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey leads all NFL rushers with 1,292 rushing yards this season. McCaffrey has 13 rushing touchdowns to go with his 1,292 rushing yards.

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill leads all receivers with 1,542 receiving yards this season.

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa leads all passers with 3,921 passing yards so far in 2023. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is second in passing yards with 3,795 yards.

The New England Patriots have the leagues lowest point total with a total of 186 points through 14 games. The New York Giants are the only other team with under 200 points so far this season with 189.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season as a head coach. The Steelers currently sit at 7-7 on the season and will need to win at least 2 games or win 1 and tie 1 to secure another season at .500 or better.

    10. Thoughts on Matt Patricia running the Eagles defense last night?

Greg Bedard: I giggled when they gave up the lead late. But you know, for what I know, this was a Howie Roseman production. Howie put them in. He likes almost sort of like “Game of Thrones” things on his coaching staff and in his front office. And from what I heard, this was a Howie Roseman directed move on the coaching staff.

     9. Other than the Niners, do you believe in anyone – anyone at all – in the NFC?

Greg Bedard: I think the Eagles would be right there at the end. They’re way too talented not to figure things out. If they just play a little bit more conservative, which, you know, I think Matt Patricia can do in time, and they just sort of make the opponent beat them, I think they have a chance. But the 49ers are the clear class of the NFC.

     8. Do you believe in anyone – anyone at all – in the AFC?

Greg Bedard: I like the Dolphins and the Ravens but no. I don’t trust Miami’s offense traveling in January and I don’t trust Harbaugh at all.

     7. Who should be better than they are?

Greg Bedard: Seattle. Geno Smith played tremendous last year and he’s been awful this year. They have talent on that team. I don’t know what the problem is. They should be better than they are.

    6. Do you like the league right now?

Greg Bedard: Nope. I heard Murray talking about this, I think with Gasper over the weekend, the triple header that was on Saturday, I barely had any interest in those games. I don’t think I even watched all that much of the games and that to me says a lot of where the NFL is right now. It’s not very competitive, not very compelling. Too many injuries, too many flags. I just don’t have any interest in tuning in.

  • Cleveland Browns v Denver Broncos

     5. Is it a toolbag move for the NFL to have a game on Christmas Eve?

Greg Bedard: Yes. I don’t like it. They’ve done it for years. I know I’ve covered games on Christmas Eve. You know, maybe it was more late afternoon, but yeah, don’t do that. Don’t do that to people.

    4. Who is the most overrated QB in the league?

Greg Bedard: Dak Prescott. I mean, look, I think he’s good, but to me he looks like a quarterback that everything has to be right. He plays behind a great offensive line, they have a running game, they have a good defense, but when things haven’t worked, he’s just not that good.

     3. Who’s the MVP?

Greg Bedard: I know this last weekend didn’t help his cause, but to me it’s Tyreek Hill. I just think he’s the biggest difference maker. You take him away from the Dolphins, yes they won this week against the Jets, to me that game said more about the Jets and about Zach Wilson and their quarterback position than anything else. Tyreek Hill is the biggest difference maker. The Dolphins don’t have a chance in hell if he’s not on the field.

     2. If Mike Tomlin moves on from Pittsburgh: where would be the best landing spot for Tomlin? Who would be a good coach for the Steelers?

Greg Bedard: For Tomlin, it would be Washington. He’s from Hampton, Virginia. He went to William and Mary. It’d be going home for him. Who would be good for the Steelers? I think Jim Harbaugh would fit there. I mean, he sort of fits their persona.

1.Who is your favorite NFL coach of all time?

Greg Bedard: Joe Gibbs. I just loved to watch his teams play. He won three Super Bowls with three different quarterbacks. I think he’s completely underrated and not mentioned enough. I will say Bill Walsh was right there for me also. He was like my first coach that I was like, “this guy’s just cool” in a sweater on the sideline. Just, I don’t know. I just liked Bill Walsh as well.
