Gasper: Would hiring Bill O’Brien as offensive coordinator help bring Tom Brady in?
Felger & Mazz
Chris Gasper of The Boston Globe joins Felger and Mazz every Friday! This week, Gasper made mention of the fact that hiring Bill O’Brien as Offensive Coordinator could help a team land Tom Brady this offseason.
Does hiring Bill O'Brien help bring in #12?
Chris Gasper: The other thing that’s interesting to me is just how much is the Bill O’Brien thing tied to all the smoke that’s been going on, really for more than a month now, about the idea that Brady would come back here. Do they feel like they have a better chance to get Brady back here if Bill O’Brien’s here?
Felger: What are you doing? Do you really think this is worth your time? Your breathe?
Chris Gasper: I’m just saying, like, it seems like Brady really has an interest in Bill O’Brien as someone that makes it easier for him….
Felger: He does?
Chris Gasper: Yeah.
Jim Murray: Where’d this come from?
Felger: Where’s this coming? I haven’t heard anything about this.
Mazz: Me neither, what the hell is this?
Felger: What are you talking about?
Chris Gasper: Didn’t you guys read the story in Tampa that was down there about Bill O’Brien potentially coming there? This was before Leftwich was even fired. That they were sniffing around Bill O’Brien because they thought it would give him a better chance with Brady. I think some of these teams think if they get Bill O’Brien, maybe they can get Brady to. That it ups their chances.
Felger: And do you think the Patriots are one of those teams?
Chris Gasper: I do. Yes.
Mazz: You’ve got to be kidding.
Felger: You think the Patriots want Brady back?
Mazz: What the hell happened to you?
Felger: No. No. You think the Patriots want Brady back?
Chris Gasper: I do think they would entertain it. Yeah, I do. I think it’s more on their side than his side. I’ve said that before. But I do think, yes, I think they would entertain that 100%.

Felger: And then what would happen to Mac Jones?
Chris Gasper: He’s still on his rookie deal. You could keep him here. He sits behind Tom Brady for a year or two and then, you know, maybe learn something and you turn it over. Or if a team that didn’t get Brady gets kind of desperate let’s say like the Raiders, what if Josh McDaniels suddenly says, “yeah, we believe in Mac Jones in a way that you don’t”, we’ll give you the number seven pick for Mac Jones. I’d make that trade in a heartbeat.
Jim Murray: Now, when you say the team is behind it, ownership, fine. I mean, that puts asses in seats, buzz is back. You think Bill wants it?
Chris Gasper: That’s a great question. I feel like Brady and Bill have reached some sort of like “detente”, and if you had somebody there like, you know if Bill O’Brien’s there as like a buffer, then it could potentially work. Listen, TO BE CLEAR, I don’t think it’s going to happen. I’m just saying. It’s just another reason why Bill O’Brien would be appealing to them.
Felger: I think they’ve all read some form of detente, by the way, between Brady and Belichick and Brady going to Kraft’s wedding.
Chris Gasper: Yes.
Felger: And f-ing up a game in the process, like, all of that I think they’re in a good place with just a guess. That’s not the issue. They’re going to bury Mac Jones for a year. Really?
Chris Gasper: Why not? Well, I mean, after the ringing endorsement that Bill gave him at the end of the season, that would surprise you?
Felger: I just, it doesn’t feel like them. It doesn’t feel like them to invest a first round pick in this guy and…
Chris Gasper: Well, let me ask you this. Does it feel like them to announce they’re doing an offensive coordinator search? Does it feel like them sent out a letter to season ticket holders saying they’re going to critically evaluate every aspect of their football operations? Does any of that sound like them?
