Felger & Mazz

Weekdays 2pm-6pm

Earlier this offseason the New England Patriots signed special teamer Chris Board to a contract. When Board met with the media yesterday, he mentioned how the Patriots made it a priority to get him to Foxboro. That had Felger asking…why do the Patriots prioritize signing special teamers in free agency?

  • Chris Board says the Patriots prioritized getting him to Foxboro

  • Felger: Chris Board. Who is that you might ask? Close listeners to the program with good memories will know. Otherwise, you have no flippin idea. Chris Board. Chris Board is the special teamer from Detroit who the Patriots targeted in free agency and signed early in free agency.

    Jim Murray: Hot commodity.

Felger: Really like one of their marquee free agent signings. Chris Board the personal protector on the punt team. The guy that runs down the field on kicks just to watch it roll into the end zone or roll to a stop. Bill is all horned up for Chris Board. When they played the Lions last year he called him the best special teamer in the league. Then he hit free agency and the Patriots went right after him. And that’s Board saying that the Patriots definitely made a priority out of me. So it’s just it’s a small thing, but it’s like I’d be aggravated if I were Patriots fan. Like can we prioritize, like, I don’t know, stars? Could we prioritize receivers or quarterbacks or….

    Mazz: Players who matter?

Felger: Like, can we prioritize guys that win games and I want to watch? Why are we always prioritizing the freaking guy that covers punts? But that’s the way the Patriots are run under Bill Belichick. He gets all horned up for the guy that covers kicks. And so Chris Board was a priority, which he told you yesterday. He met the media yesterday and talked about you know, “yeah there were some teams interested but boy the Patriots knocked on my door so here I am”. It’s like, can we ever knock down the door of someone interesting as opposed to Chris Board? But now this ties into the schedules coming out tomorrow, we’ll find out how many primetime games you have. And you’re allowed to have five. Or is it six? I can’t remember. But it feels like you’re not going to hit the quota. And certainly maybe late in the year they’ll give you some interesting 1 p.m. games to put you in a flex territory or 4 p.m. games to put you in a flex position. But the days of you maxing out your primetime games are over, at least for the time being. And the reason is becuase you prioritize guys like Chris Board.
