On Wednesday, we found out Matt Patricia was a ‘top candidate’ for the Denver Broncos’ defensive coordinator job. Even though Patricia didn’t get that job – it went to Vance Joseph on Thursday morning – he still may be headed for the Mile High City.

On Thursday, Broncos insider Benjamin Allbright shared on Twitter that he still thinks there’s a chance Sean Payton brings the Patriots’ 2022 offensive play caller  to the Broncos. “I don’t think hiring Vance ends the possibility of Matt Patricia being on the staff, FYI,” Allbright said.

  • Patricia joining the Broncos’ staff could happen in one of two ways. The first would be as a positional coach, although Payton and Joseph started filling those positions throughout the day on Thursday.

The Broncos could also look to bring Patricia in as a general ‘consultant’ or ‘advisor.’ Such a role wouldn’t be entirely new to Patricia, who returned to the Patriots as a ‘Senior Football Advisor’ after being fired as the head coach of the Detroit Lions during the 2020 season.

Whether it’s as a coach, advisor, or some other title, the Patriots would get a chance to face Patricia next year if he joins the Broncos’ staff. As part of the NFL’s rotating divisional schedule, the Patriots are playing in Denver in 2023.

If Patricia doesn’t end up in Denver, his future remains up in the air. According to a report in late January, Patricia is “still assessing his future,” whether that be in New England or elsewhere.
