The Celtics have been dealing with their worst run over injuries of the season over the last week, with Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, Robert Williams, and Al Horford all missing time. Despite that, the team has won four games in a row and six of their last seven.

Part of the reason the team has remained successful during this stretch is depth players stepping up and impacting the game in bigger roles. That includes point guard Derrick White, who for his efforts was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Monday.

  • With Smart out, White has been the Celtics’ starting point guard. In four games last week, he averaged 24.5 points and 7.5 assists in 38 minutes per game, as the Celtics went 4-0.

The week was highlighted by his career-high 33-point performance against the Hornets on Friday night. White shot 12-of-19 from the field in that game, including 8-of-14 from three. He also had 10 assists to pick up the first of what ended up being back-to-back double-doubles.

For the season, White is averaging 11.5 points and 3.7 assists in 27.5 minutes per game. He’s started 49 of the team-high 57 games he has appeared in. His 39.3 percent success rate on three pointers is on pace to be a career-high for a full season.

White is the second Celtics player this year to earn Player of the Week honors. He joins Jayson Tatum, who did so back in late October.

The Celtics will need White, Tatum, and the rest of the roster to keep the momentum going Tuesday night, when they face the Milwaukee Bucks in a game with potentially massive postseason implications. Coverage of that game begins at 7 p.m. ET on 105.7 WROR and the Celtics Radio Network.
