Winslow Townson-USA TODAY SportsThe Boston Bruins have followed up their latest aggressive trade deadline move with the news that fans have been really waiting to hear for a long time.
David Pastrnak has signed a long-term contract extension.
As the team announced on Thursday, they've signed Pastrnak to an eight-year extension worth a cap hit of $11.25 million per season. Our own Ty Anderson had the contract details on Twitter, but Ty says Darren Dreger beat him by 10 seconds on Twitter. So, good tweetin', Darren. Fastest Twitter Fingers In The West, they call him.
National reporters later added more details on the Pastrnak contract. According to Dreger, Pastrnak has a full no-movement clause for the first five years, which will take him through his age-31 season.
Pierre LeBrun then reported the year-by-year breakdown. Pastrnak gets a $26.5 million signing bonus and will make $13 million in each of the first two seasons.
The Pastrnak extension announcement came mere minutes after news dropped that they'd acquired forward Tyler Bertuzzi from the Detroit Red Wings. The downside there is it could mean long-term injury concerns for Taylor Hall or Nick Foligno. But either way, Bruins GM Don Sweeney has sent a strong message to the rest of the NHL: we are all in to win the Stanley Cup this year.
On top of that, the B's also have Pastrnak, Charlie McAvoy, and Hampus Lindholm signed through at least 2030, Pavel Zacha and Brandon Carlo signed through 2027, Charlie Coyle signed through 2026, and Brad Marchand and Linus Ullmark signed through 2025. And they never had to give up their top prospects, Fabian Lysell or Mason Lohrei.
So while the B's may be lacking in draft capital in the immediate future, and they may have trouble being as much of a wagon as they are this season, they aren't going away after the current year. But it's truly "Stanley Cup or bust" now.
