New England Patriots

  • Could Patriots center David Andrews actually be on track to play Thanksgiving night?

Andrews had to be helped off the field during the Pats’ win over the Jets on Sunday, and initial reports suggested a serious, potentially season-ending thigh injury. Four days later, he’s in Minneapolis after traveling with the Patriots, who face the Minnesota Vikings in prime time on Thanksgiving. That’s a great sign for his chances to play.

The center and longtime Patriots captain is officially listed as “Questionable” for the game. He was a non-participant on Monday’s projected injury report, but was able to practice in a limited capacity on Tuesday and Wednesday. Elsewhere on the offensive line, tackle Isaiah Wynn (foot) has already been ruled out.

  • If Andrews ultimately can’t play Thanksgiving night, James Ferentz would likely once again step in as the starting center against the Vikings.

Another name to know at the position, however, is undrafted rookie center Kody Russey. He was a team captain and started all 14 games in his only season at Houston, where he was a teammate of Patriots cornerback and Week 11 hero Marcus Jones. With Russey manning the offensive line, the Cougars boasted the No. 15 scoring offense in the nation (35.9 points per game). The Patriots recently signed Russey to the 53-man roster off their practice squad.

  • It’s a great sign for Andrews, though, that he made the trip to Minnesota. He’s certainly going to give it a shot. It would be a little surprising if he traveled all the way out there only to be ruled inactive. Whatever happens on Thanksgiving night, it’s clear now that Andrews’ injury is not as serious as initially thought.
