With yet another round of cuts completed on Sunday, the Bruins are officially down to just two groups.

For the B’s, it’s an expected move with the club officially beyond the halfway mark of the 2023 training camp, and with the team barely a week away from the start of the 2023-24 NHL season.

The Sunday cuts also came as a result of a quick turnaround, with Monday marking the start of what will be a traveling back-to-back for the Bruins, with a game in Philly on Monday night before a Tuesday night preseason contest at TD Garden.

  • The big move for the Bruins came with the decision to release veteran winger Alex Chiasson from his professional tryout agreement with the club.

In action for two preseason games, Chiasson did not record a point in either game, and had two brutal misses on the net front on the power play in Boston’s most recent preseason tilt. Beyond the zeroes, Chiasson put up two shots on goal, and added one hit in just under 30 minutes of total time on ice with the club.

Speaking following Sunday’s practice, Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery noted that Chiasson did not come up short, but that the Bruins wanted to cut their numbers down a little bit and also give the 33-year-old a chance to latch on with another organization before the end of the preseason.

Chiasson’s inability to capitalize on his power-play looks last Friday was probably all the Bruins needed to see, really. It’s probably not fair to judge one player off one power-play sequence, but when you’re on a tryout and you’re known for those kind of goals, you almost have to connect. It also felt like Chiasson was just a touch behind the play in terms of his pace and ability to play as fast as the Bruins want to in 2023-24.

Chiasson’s cut means that Danton Heinen, who scored a goal in his last outing, is the only remaining ‘PTO’ player still on the Black and Gold’s camp roster.

  • The Bruins have also placed goaltender Michael DiPietro on waivers for the purpose of reassigning him to the minors for the start of Providence’s training camp.

DiPietro, picked up in last year’s Jack Studnicka trade, made one appearance for the B’s this preseason, and turned aside 11 of 12 shots thrown his way in last Tuesday’s loss to the Sabres.

Following his move from the Canucks organization to the Bruins organization, DiPietro spent the majority of the 2022-23 season with ECHL Maine, where he won 19 games and posted a .918 save percentage in 29 appearances. DiPietro, who has appeared in three NHL games (0-2-0 with a .771 save percentage) over this pro career, also stopped 33-of-35 in his lone AHL appearance of the year.

In the minors, he’ll be competing with Kyle Keyser to be Brandon Bussi‘s backup and essentially be the No. 4 goaltender on the organizational depth chart.

  • Boston’s other two cuts from camp will only further bolster what’s looking like a loaded P-Bruins squad for 2023-24, with Brett Harrison moved from Boston’s camp down to the AHL camp.

Harrison appeared in two games this preseason, and finishes his latest pro camp run with two shots, one hit, and three blocked shots in over 24 minutes of total time on ice.

A third-round pick in 2021, Harrison can play both center and wing, and is embarking on his pro career following 82 goals and 167 points in 180 games in the Ontario Hockey League. Harrison also made one AHL appearance in 2022-23, and recorded one helper in that contest.

  • Harrison (and several others cut from B’s camp in the last few days) will be joined in Providence by defenseman Frederic Brunet, who has also been moved from Boston to Providence in the latest round of cuts.

The 20-year-old, left-shooting D appeared in one game this preseason, and is certainly an offensive threat following a 2022-23 campaign that included 16 goals and 73 points in 68 QMJHL games last season.

A 6-foot-3 defenseman, Brunet added two assists in his lone AHL appearance of the season last year, and is expected to forego the remainder of his junior career and start his pro career with Providence this year.
