Boston Bruins

  • The Bruins will take to the ice Thursday night at Madison Square Garden without defenseman Derek Forbort or goaltender Jeremy Swayman available. And it sounds like that could be the case for an extended spell.

“Jeremy and Forbs are both back in Boston. We’ll have a team, official update later. They’re getting evaluated there today,” Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery said Thursday morning. “It’s week-to-week for both.”

Well, that’s not what you want to hear.

  • Injured in a third-period collision with Patrice Bergeron in Tuesday’s comeback win over the Penguins, it’s clear that the 23-year-old Swayman is dealing with some sort of injury to his left knee/leg.

Ultimately requiring help to get to his skates and off the ice, Swayman did not put any weight on his left leg as he glided off. It also appeared that ESPN’s on-ice mics picked up Bergeron saying ‘knee’ immediately after Swayman, who faced four shots in relief of Linus Ullmark in the game, appeared down and out.

Swayman was not on crutches following the contest, but did have ice on his left knee following the game, according to those on the scene in Pittsburgh.

  • With Swayman out, the Bruins recalled veteran netminder Keith Kinkaid from AHL Providence on an emergency basis ahead of Providence’s game on Wednesday.

In net for four games with the P-Bruins prior to Wednesday’s call to the NHL, the 33-year-old Kinkaid has posted two wins and a .922 save percentage out of the gate in 2022.

The 6-foot-3 Kinkaid, who posted a .943 save percentage in over 70 minutes of preseason work for the Bruins this fall, is a veteran of 167 NHL games since 2013, with a 69-58-21 record and .905 save percentage over that run between three different organizations.

Kinkaid will serve as Ullmark’s backup Thursday night in New York City.

  • On the backend, the loss of Forbort, who is dealing with what looks like some sort of hand or finger injury after a blocked shot off his right hand knocked him out of Tuesday’s game, will leave the Bruins down their top penalty-killing defenseman.

Consistently praised by Montgomery as one of the B’s unsung heroes on the blue line this year, Forbort was averaging a team-high 3:36 of shorthanded time on ice per game for a Boston penalty kill that ranks as the league’s top unit. Forbort’s penalty-killing work has been absolutely phenomenal, too. One of 58 NHL defensemen to play at least 25 shorthanded minutes out of the gate this season at the time of his injury, Forbort ranked 10th in on-ice shots against per 60, and seventh in on-ice high-danger chances against per 60.

Based on the week-to-week status, as well as what led to Forbort’s departure from Tuesday’s game, wondering about a fracture seems fair. The Bruins do have some relatively recent experience with this, too, as Jeremy Lauzon suffered a fracture in his left hand in 2021 and ended up missing 13 games.

With Forbort out, Mike Reilly will be the first man up for the Black and Gold defense corps, though the Bruins can also turn to Jakub Zboril should Reilly’s game reintroduction to the B’s lineup go sideways.

The Bruins also have the return of Charlie McAvoy looming over the club, though he is still at least a few weeks away, based on everything that’s been said by all parties.
