For once, a list that actually makes sense. We think you’ll agree that this rundown of the 15 Best Songs Ever Written lives up to its name.

The list comes courtesy of MSN and our own Jon Wallach. Jon has seemingly broken the string of Adam 12’s Cursed Lists. If you missed it, the lists of Dad Rock Songs and 100 Greatest Drummers that we recently dug into were sub par, to say the least.

Still, we had a lot of fun riffing on those roundups. Because that’s what these lists are meant to do, right? Put a song or musician or what have you in a place you’re not expecting to see them so you’ll respond emotionally. And then share the list with your friends so they’ll respond, too.

15 Best Songs Ever Written: Nothing But Hits

From the MSN piece: “Music has a unique ability to transcend time, evoke deep emotions, and bring people together. Whether it’s a soulful ballad or an electrifying rock anthem, the power of a great song is undeniable.” Well said, MSN scribe. Well said.

I share their words here on purpose and in the same spirit that I shared them on the air, because that blurb is bubbling over with big hints. Ballads and rock anthems abound on this particular list. So if you’re looking for surprises–whether they be pleasant or unpleasant–you won’t find those here.

Actually, that’s not altogether true. As you’ll hear when you listen to the audio I’ve shared above, there were a few songs from the fifteen that Hardy and Jon guessed would be represented that didn’t make the cut. You can flip through the full list here, or just scroll down for a few choice selections.

  • Prince "Purple Rain"

I led off the segment with this one because I know both Hardy and Jon are big fans of The Purple One.

  • The Beatles "Hey Jude"

You can’t make a list of the best songs ever written and not have a Beatles song on there, right?

  • Aretha Franklin "Respect"

You gotta R-E-S-P-E-C-T the fact that Hardy and Jon got this one without a hint.

  • Queen "Bohemian Rhapsody"

This song was a hit when it was originally released, then again in the ’90s, then AGAIN in the 2010’s. So it has plenty of “Best Song” cred.

  • Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

The lone ’90s entry on the list fittingly belongs to the song that launched the grunge movement into popular culture and mainstreamed alternative rock.

  • Led Zeppelin "Stairway To Heaven"

This is my mom’s favorite song, so I decided to highlight it (even though I’m not a fan of it myself). I’m a good son like that.
