With the holiday travel season well underway, this list of the best cities for long layovers just might come in handy.

The fine folks at Lawn Love did a deep dive into 128 American cities. They chose cities served by the nation’s busiest airports. And what they came up with is this ranking: 2023’s Best and Worst Cities for Long Layovers. And for once? Boston made the right list! We’re in the Top 10 best cities for long layovers, which is much better than being in the Top 10 worst cities for long layovers. Or would that be the Bottom 10?

Here’s more on Lawn Love’s process:

We looked at each city’s share of delayed and canceled flights and average departure delay time. We also searched for cities that are easy to navigate, especially from the airport, and offer plenty of fun things to see and do without breaking the bank.

OK, so maybe I shouldn’t have been so quick with the praise. Which I probably should’ve figured out myself without the blurb from Lawn Love. Obviously, if a city ranks in the Top 10 best cities for long layovers, they clearly are serviced by an airport that experiences its fair share of layovers. And that’s certainly the case with Boston and Logan Airport: they rank 31st for delays and 23rd for cancellations.

Best Cities for Long Layovers: Where Does Boston Rank?

On the other side of the coin, Boston received high marks in a few categories. We’re 26th in safety, 21st in staying and eating, 14th in things to do, and 4th in getting around. Not too shabby!

Take a stroll and a scroll through the Top 10 below to find out Boston’s overall rank. And take notes: maybe you’re lucky enough to be traveling to one of the other Top 10 cities this holiday season.
