On Thursday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Beetle went on a rant about how stuff is overrated in baseball, especially when it comes to Chris Sale.

  • Even Beetle admits he's guilty of it...

Marc Bertrand: Baseball fans have always, and I include myself in this, you always get enamored with the stuff, right? We always get enamored with the guy who can just throw heat.

Scott Zolak: Not only that, like Derek Lowe’s sinker back in the day, there’s certain guys that could pitch… the splitter that the closer for the Yankees had forever, Mariano Rivera. That split fastball that cut the way it cut, there’s guys that can’t do that.

Marc Bertrand: I’m just going to tell you that in this day and age, the stuff has never been more overrated. It’s always been overrated. Right. We’re always enamored with it.

Scott Zolak: You’re talking pure heat or just a different pitch?

Marc Bertrand: Well, he’s (Chaim Bloom) talking about velocity and the ability to make guys swing and miss based on his velocity. We overrated it. We’ve always overrated it. But I feel like now more than ever, there are guys that have the ability to make the ball move and the ability to locate. That just sets them apart. And he (Chris Sale) can’t locate it all right now.
