Boston Celtics

On Monday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Beetle admitted he wished the Celtics had a head coach who would light them up.

  • Ime Udoka had the ability to do that...

Marc Bertrand: I wish they had a coach who was willing to really light them up. Because I feel like they need it right now.

Scott Zolak: I think he (Joe Mazzulla) tried that a little bit last night. He looked angry att imes. But I mean he’s a different dude, when interviews start, he’s so young he’s kind of one of them. I don’t know if you need like the Pop (Gregg Popovitch) type, you know, the Doc (Rivers) type to really roll the sleeves up and put your hands on your hips and go nuts and get in their faces. I hope they respect him enough to take it that way.

Marc Bertrand: The thing we said about Ime Udoka when he was here last season was he would get all over them. If it were an effort thing, he’d be all over them.

Scott Zolak: He’d be out there on the court slapping them as they came by.

Marc Bertrand: He was not afraid to give it right back to them either.

Scott Zolak: Oh called them out in the press too.

Marc Bertrand: Called them out all the time. Pushed their buttons all the time. It’s what he would do. But he also had experience at this level as a coach. And, oh by the way, could say I’m a former player. I know what it’s like to be in your shoes. It’s what we liked. I mean, you can’t give him credit a year ago, as we all did about being a former player and not taking anybody’s crap or not being willing to settle for anyone’s, you know, effort or focus levels and then the next coach not be a former player the same way the previous one in Brad Stevens was not a former player and we used to criticize him for that and say he didn’t play in the NBA. Maybe there are guys that just don’t give him enough because he doesn’t have that on his resume. I know Mazzulla played at a high level, but he didn’t play in the NBA. He didn’t do that.

Scott Zolak: It’s a respect thing. They like him. Do they consider him more of a buddy or more of a coach and a leader?
