  • Chaim Bloom and the Red Sox let yet another member of the 2018 World Series roster depart for greener pastures Tuesday night, as starter Nathan Eovaldi agreed to a two-year deal with the Texas Rangers, according to multiple reports.

Eovaldi’s deal with Texas will be worth $34 million over two years, but also contains a vesting player option for a third year, and with the deal worth up to a potential $63 million over three seasons per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

  • It’s worth noting that Eovaldi’s average annual value with the Rangers ($17 million per season) will be lower than what it would’ve been had he accepted his $19.65 million qualifying offer from the Red Sox.

But in Texas, Eovaldi gets multiple years, and on a team that’s clearly more positioned to ‘win now’ after their pickup of Jacob deGrom earlier this offseason.

The 32-year-old Eovaldi, who put up a 6-3 record and 3.87 ERA in 20 starts with the Red Sox last season, was also considered to be the best starting pitcher left on the open market.

Acquired from Tampa Bay in 2018, Eovaldi compiled a 26-18 record and 4.05 ERA in 96 games with the Red Sox over five seasons of work. His best year with Boston came in 2021, with 11 wins and a career-high 195 strikeouts on the way to an All-Star Game appearance, as well as a fourth-place finish in American League Cy Young voting and 15th in AL MVP voting.

  • The decision to move on from Eovaldi is a bit of a curious one given Boston’s status as an undeniable pitching-needy squad, which is something they’ve admitted multiple times throughout the offseason.

    Speaking with

Sox “definitely want to add another starter.” Feels Sox have pitchers who can give innings at back of rotation but will look for “upside, leadership, and consistency” in adding a starter. Eovaldi and Wacha remain possibilities.

    — Alex Speier (@alexspeier) December 5, 2022">reporters at the Winter Meetings earlier this month, Bloom said that the team was going to look for a starting pitcher who would bring ‘upside, leadership, and consistency’ to Boston’s rotation.

Thus far far, all of Boston’s pitching adds have come in the bullpen. And the options are certainly starting to dwindle.

Michael Wacha, who won 11 of his 13 decisions and posted a 3.32 ERA in over 127 innings of work with the Red Sox last season, remains on the open market and without a contract for 2023.

  • Eovaldi’s departure leaves the Red Sox with a 2023 projected rotation headlined by Nick Pivetta, the wild card known as Chris Sale, 2022 bullpen pieces Tanner Houck and Garrett Whitlock, and options such as Brayan Bello, Kutter Crawford, and Josh Winckowski also on the table for Alex Cora’s squad.

And with Eovaldi officially gone, third baseman Rafael Devers and pitchers Matt Barnes, Ryan Brasier, and Chris Sale are the only members of the 2018 World Series roster still with the franchise. Eovaldi is just the latest member of a mass exodus obviously headlined by Xander Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez.
