We now have more clarity on the injury situation for Red Sox outfielder Adam Duvall. He will be on the shelf for a while.

Duvall went on the injured list Monday, ahead of the Red Sox’ series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg. According to multiple reports, it’s a fractured wrist, so Duvall will obviously need more than 10 days to heal. But Red Sox Manager Alex Cora is looking on the bright side.

  • “Just a fracture, that’s it,” Cora said (via Ian Browne). “No surgery. Just put a cast on it and let it heal, and he’ll be back whenever he’s ready.”

Browne added further context, explaining that the “just a fracture” part means Duvall will not need to have surgery. If he did, the timetable obviously would’ve been longer. Browne projects Duvall at 6-8 weeks, rather than 8-10 or beyond.

  • So, mixed bag of news there. Based on Cora’s reaction, he’s actually relieved it’s “only” a broken bone and a simple recovery. But the Red Sox now have to go as long as two months without their starting center fielder that was hitting the cover off the ball to begin the season.

Very frustrating, no doubt. But perhaps some relief is in order knowing that Duvall’s injury and subsequent recovery wasn’t more complicated. Duvall underwent surgery in the 2022 off-season to repair a torn tendon sheath in that same wrist, which made him an affordable free-agent signing in the first place. Awful luck, to be certain, but at least not a re-aggravating of the same injury as last year.
