The Boston Red Sox just made the roster move many were suspecting.

Unfortunately, it involves outfielder Adam Duvall, whose thrillingly fast start for the Red Sox has been spoiled by injury. Duvall landed awkwardly on his left wrist while diving for a fly ball during a game against the Detroit Tigers, and it appears he could not avoid time on the shelf.

  • Duvall is now headed to the injured list, according to multiple reports. According to

Sox say Duvall is still going through testing in Boston.

    — Pete Abraham (@PeteAbe) April 10, 2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe, Duvall is still undergoing tests in Boston. Duvall fell on the same wrist he had surgically repaired in the off-season, so that is certainly far from ideal.

There’s no official timetable for Duvall’s return at this point. The only hope now is that Duvall can return and look anything like the guy he was at the plate in his first eight games. Duvall hit four home runs and drove in 14 runs, both of which had him tied for the American League lead entering Monday’s action.

To replace Duvall on the roster, the Red Sox called up Bobby Dalbec from Triple-A Worcester. Boston kicks off a four-game set against the Rays in St. Petersburg Monday night.

  • Duvall obviously wasn’t going to bat anywhere near .455 and probably wasn’t going to lead the league in homers or RBIs. But it did look like Duvall was returning toward his 2021 form, when he hit 38 home runs and led the National League with 113 RBIs. Perhaps most encouraging for Duvall was that he was keeping the strikeouts relatively low, with just five in eight games.

So, once Duvall returns to the lineup, the hope is he can at least keep a similar approach to the one that’s had him putting the bat on the ball more often. But for now, Red Sox fans will have to hold their breath that arguably the Red Sox’ most promising new addition hasn’t gone poof just like that.

  • Duvall’s move to the IL is hopefully the extent of the Red Sox’ roster decisions, as it pertains to his injury. Since he’s still undergoing tests, it’s unclear how long he’ll be out and whether it might be serious enough for surgery or something major.
