Things got heated during the Red Sox’ win over the Blue Jays in Toronto on Wednesday night. Boston starter Nick Pivetta plunked Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk with a pitch during the third inning, which caused the benches to clear.
Pivetta and third baseman Rafael Devers were among the Red Sox who started jawing with Toronto players and had to be held back by umpires. Kirk, starter Alek Manoah and DH Vladimir Guerrero Jr. were among the Blue Jays players who got heavily involved in the dust-up.
The Red Sox ultimately won the game 6-5 in 10 innings. J.D. Martinez took a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to force in the go-ahead run, then Alex Verdugo hit a two-run double for some much-needed insurance runs. The Blue Jays would score twice in the bottom of the 10th, but Red Sox reliever Matt Strahm was able to escape the jam and close the game.
