For this installment of Belichick 20/20 we rewind to a week nine match up in 2003 against the Denver Broncos. With 3:06 left in the game, the Patriots trailed 24-23 and the Broncos had Brady and the Patriots’ offense pinned on their own one yard line. What came next can be described as peak Bill Belichick. On fourth down, Belichick decided to take an intentional safety to go down 26-23 and punt the ball back to Denver with hopes that the Patriots’ defense would stop the Broncos’ offense and give give the Patriots’ offense better field position. The defense would make a stop and Brady would connect with David Givens to give the Patriots the lead and the win.
