Former Red Sox pitcher Nick Pivetta heads to Padres
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Wednesday that former Red Sox starting pitcher Nick Pivetta signed a four-year, $55 million deal with the San Diego Padres.
Pivetta spent his last five seasons in Boston, after being acquired from the Phillies in 2020. With the Red Sox, Pivetta amassed a record of 37-41 over 633 total innings pitched, posting an overall ERA of 3.81 with 718 total strikeouts.
He was mostly utilized as a mid-rotation starter and performed fine in that role. However, at 32 years old, Pivetta is nearing the end of his prime, and the Red Sox made multiple pitching additions in the off-season that allowed them to move on.

The Red Sox will have at least three new pitchers in their rotation in 2025. In December, the team acquired lefty Garrett Crochet from the White Sox, and he will likely be the new ace in Boston. They also brought in former Dodger Walker Buehler, signing him to a one-year, $21.05 million deal. They will also get the long-awaited debut of Lucas Giolito, who signed in 2024 but missed the entire season due to elbow surgery.
The additions of Crochet, Buehler, and Giolito filled out the Red Sox’ rotation, so moving on from Pivetta was inevitable. The three should bring a noticeable boost to the Red Sox’ pitching room in 2025, even after losing Pivetta.
