Patriots expected to get defensive leader back at practice on Thursday
New England Patriots defensive tackle Christian Barmore is expected to return to practice on Thursday. Barmore has been out since the start of training camp due to a blood clot issue.
On Wednesday, New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo told reporters defensive tackle Christian Barmore would return to practice within the next two weeks. It turns out, the timeline on that could be sooner rather than later.
According to multiple reports, Barmore is expected to return to Patriots practice on Thursday. It will be his first practice with the team since the early days of training camp, when he was limited. Barmore was then diagnosed with a blood clot issue, and has been on the non-football illness list ever since.
Just because Barmore is returning to practice on Thursday doesn’t mean he’ll play immediately. Once he’s officially designated to return from NFI the team will have 21 days to move him to the active roster. That will allow the team to ease him back into action if needed.
Whenever Barmore returns, his presence will be a big boost to a defensive front that has struggled for most of the season. The Patriots rank 23rd in the NFL allowing 130.5 rushing yards per game, and ranked towards the bottom of the league in pressure rate and sacks before beating up on the Bears’ offensive line last week.
Barmore, 25, is coming off of a breakout season in 2023. He led the team with 8.5 sacks and 49 quarterback pressures, and was second on the team with 13 tackles for loss. Following the season Barmore signed a four-year, $92 million extension with the team.
