Patriots Edge Out Bears 19-3, But Kendrick Bourne’s Benching Raises Eyebrows
On this morning’s Toucher & Hardy, Andrew Callahan discussed Kendrick Bourne’s benching in the Patriots’ 19-3 win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday at Soldier Field, which improved New England’s record to 3-7 on the season. Callahan mentioned that he’d gotten a tip on Saturday that Bourne might not play, but he couldn’t confirm it at the time. He explained that the benching had a lot to do with Bourne’s recent performance—he had a couple of drops and missed plays in the previous games, and the team is also focusing on giving more reps to younger receivers like Jalen Polk, Javon Baker, and Tyquan Thornton.

Callahan also pointed out that while the receiver group is still pretty immature, KJ Osborne has been more professional and consistent, which is why he got more playing time. He added that the team had tried to trade Bourne but couldn’t find a deal, so for now, they’re keeping him around. The benching seemed like a message to Bourne—basically, “prove us wrong next week if you want more playing time.”
