Callahan: Kendrick Bourne benched for younger WRs
On Tuesday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Andrew Callahan explains the New England Patriots’ decision to not play Kendrick Bourne vs. the Chicago Bears.
Callahan: Reaction to Bourne Benching
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Fred Toucher: Why did Kendrick Bourne not play?
Andrew Callahan: So couple of things are going on. I had gotten a tip on Saturday that he might not play. I reached out, but couldn’t get it confirmed. Alright, so we’ll see what happens on Sunday.
My understanding is that it was partly related to his performance, and obviously, they were pushed to play the young receivers. That doesn’t just include Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker; it also includes second-year players Demario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte.
So that leaves only one spot left for him, and that’s K.J. Osborn. If Osborn sucks then why are you going to play him?
We know that, in addition to being young, this receiver room is fairly immature. My sense—not reporting—is that Osborn is someone they tried to trade. They tried to do it, but it didn’t work, and no one wanted to buy it. They needed to keep him here in New England.
Alex Van Pelt is on the record saying, “We appreciate how he comes in day-to-day. He’s the most professional guy in that [wide receiver] room.”
He hardly plays at Tennessee and hardly played in the weeks before that. I think this was kind of a bone to throw at him. Bourne’s performance at Tennessee wasn’t great. He had four catches and twice ran short of the sticks. And, the week before he had two drops.
So, the difference is not as big as the stats would show you between him and Osborn. The team only had one spot left for a veteran receiver to play and there were two of them. All the other young players will be active. They probably wanted to see what would happen this week and then take it from there.
