Mark Daniels: Not Shocked by The Lack of Activity From The Patriots at the Trade Deadline
On Wednesday’s edition of Toucher & Hardy, Mark Daniels who covers the Patriots for MassLive, joined the show. While discussing the Patriots, and how the team let the NFL trade deadline pass without making a move, Daniels pointed out that it was a ‘Buyers Market” and that the lack of activity from the team shouldn’t come off as a surprise.
“Didn’t Think It Made Any Sense To Trade Those Guys...”
Toucher: Were you surprised about the lack of activity from the Patriots selling?
Mark Daniels: You know what? I wasn’t because I think the players the team really wanted to sell were K.J. Osborn, and Tyquan Thornton. But, those guys are not productive. You see Mike Williams getting traded for a fifth, and Diontae Johnson got traded for a pick swap where one was a sixth and a fifth. It really seemed like a buyer’s market. Tre’Davious White, for example, essentially got traded for free. It was like pick swaps for seventh round picks. When you see stuff like that it’s like, who’s actually going to trade for K.J. Osborn? I mean, K.J. Osborn has caught 41% of his passes. He’s averaging under ten yards a game. Tyquan Thornton catching 50% of his passes, and averaging eight yards a game. These are average players with no production in a market where teams weren’t willing to spend for receivers who had production. So I really wasn’t surprised. Think about some of the other guys who teams would want. Kyle Dugger, Jonathan Jones, and Davon Godchaux. I didn’t think it made any sense to trade those guys.
Wallach: I was reading Dianna Russini during the day, and she was saying that the Patriots were, in her words, taking calls on Godchaux and Dugger. I thought these guys were supposed to be franchise cornerstones, for lack of a better phrase. Were the Patriots actually listening?
Mark Daniels: I mean, you can pick up the phone and say, “Hey, you know what? How’s it going?” You can listen. But I don’t think the Patriots ever seriously considered trading Kyle Dugger. That shocked me. I don’t think the Patriots are going to trade Kyle Dugger, unless someone was going to do something stupid, and that’s the qualifier. It’s almost like a bit disingenuous to say that the Pats were shopping Kyle Dugger. They weren’t. Kyle Dugger is one of your best players and had you traded him, all of a sudden a strong safety becomes a need. Davon Godchaux is by far your best nose tackle. You have him signed through 2026. I mean, you have him and Christian Barmore paired up for the next 2 or 3 seasons, but if you trade Davon Godchaux, then nose tackle becomes a need. Look at this Patriots roster and it’s horrible, right? They lack depth, and they lack top end talent. They need to sort of blow up their receiver room. They need to start over on the offensive line. They have so many needs going into next offseason. Why create another need when the return is so minimal for actual good players who’d be getting traded? Unless someone is going to do something stupid, I honestly don’t think the Pats are going to trade someone of note.
