Reiss: Does Jerod Mayo regret not going for 2-point conversion?
On Monday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Mike Reiss recaps Jerod Mayo’s decision to not go for a two-point conversion against the Titans as time expired in regulation.
Jerod Mayo Too Conservative?
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Fred Toucher: Do you think that Jerod Mayo had anything to do with the two-point conversion decision?
Mike Reiss: I do. I think that’s his call, Fred. He has to make that call. I’m curious to see what he says this morning. He’s meeting with reporters on Monday morning. I’m going to be in the air so I won’t be able to be on the video conference. But I do wonder if there was a part of him that says, “I should’ve gone Dan Campbell style. I know what the analytics say. Let’s go for it.”
For example, tell your team you believe in them. If they can’t get a two-point conversation with the game on the line, that’s OK. The way they put themselves in the game at the end there is a win in and of itself. Maybe they would’ve felt better just going for two than losing the way they did.
Toucher: Is there something to be said for the Patriots this year? Should fans be watching this team? What if Mayo gets to the podium today and says they should’ve gone for two? How important is it for Mayo to set a culture early in his coaching tenure with the Patriots? Going for two points there would’ve set a tone that we’re trying to win the game.
Reiss: 100 percent. I think that’s a great point. And I believe if Jerod Mayo is regretting not going for two, I think that’s the reason why.
In fairness to why they didn’t go for it, they weren’t gaining yards well. But you know, I like the idea of just rolling it out there and saying, “Let’s just go for it.”
I think it’s a great conversation because look at how they covered the kickoff at the start of overtime. That was a great hit by Brenden Schooler. That could’ve been a forced fumble. But you know, the guy held on to the football.
It’s easy for us to talk about the game knowing the way things unfolded. What play would you have run in a two-point conversion? Probably roll Maye out and try to let him run it in.
