Phil Perry: Patriots Should Consider Adding to the Roster at The Trade Deadline
On Friday’s edition of Zolak and Bertrand, Phil Perry who covers the Patriots for NBC Sports Boston, joined the show. While discussing what the Patriots may do at the trade deadline, Perry explained why it wouldn’t be the worst idea for the Patriots to trade for productive players to add to the roster.
“I Want To Give Those Guys All The Reps They Can Handle…”
Bertrand: Do you think they could check in on other players?
Phil Perry: I think they should.
Bertrand: What about Jakobi Meyers? Would you bring him back if you could bring him back?
Phil Perry: I love Jakobi Meyers. My initial inclination is to say yes. But for me, it would be about, is he blocking opportunities for the young players that you’re trying to find out about?
Bertrand: He doesn’t quite have a spot that fits easily, does he?
Phil Perry: The first name I think of actually is Ja’Lynn Polk, because when Polk was drafted, the name that I heard from as a comp for him, was Jakobi Meyers.
Zolak: Because he caught everything and he didn’t run.
Phil Perry: So if you bring Meyers in, are you now limiting Ja’Lynn Polk’s ability to sort of prove himself as an NFL starting caliber receiver?
Bertrand: Probably.
Phil Perry: You might be.
Bertrand: You’re probably stunting his growth.
Phil Perry: Are you taking reps away maybe from Pop Douglas too? Whose is a middle of the field type of player.
Bertrand: Yeah, that was the first name I thought of. We were like, Pop’s going to lose snaps.
Phil Perry: So as much as I love Meyers, and I think he would give that room more professionalism, which I think they need, he would give them more dependability, which I think they need. I think he’d help Drake Maye in the short term, which is why I would consider it. I think I’d lean against it right now, because I want to give those guys all the reps they can handle. Just so I know what they are going into next year. I do think you need to evaluate what you have in terms of the young players in that receiver room this year.
Bertrand: McKone is all for doing anything that helps Drake Maye. He is all about Drake Maye, first and foremost. Anything you could do to help him, you got to do it.
Phil Perry: That to me is the argument. I think he’d help him right away. Would he become their second best option on third down? Yeah, I think he would. So I get that, and if it helps you move the chains, then it helps you extend drives. Again, we’re talking about deals that happened for good players, right? DeAndre Hopkins, Deonte Johnson, you’re talking about late round picks for these guys.
