Phil Perry: What will likely decide Alex Van Pelt’s future
On Friday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston explains what will likely decide Alex Van Pelt’s future.
It will be Drake Maye’s development…
Phil Perry:
I think here in New England we forget that when you actually get a title, the team that you’re employed by does actually have to pay you. We’ve seen so many offensive coordinators who have handled that role, who don’t actually have the title, like Matt Patricia a couple years ago. He’s got the offensive line coach title so he’s being paid like an offensive line coach, even though he’s doing the job of the offensive coordinator. The Lions make up the difference. That’s not happening with Alex Van Pelt because he has to be paid as an offensive coordinator here by the Patriots because he has that title. So, they’ve made a real investment in him for multiple years. I think that helps his chances relative to what some people might think. Oh, he’s just here. He’s just getting paid by the Browns anyway. What’s the point? Like the investment has been greater than that. What I would say to you in terms of their overall offensive ranking Beetle. What if they’re a bottom 10 offense but Drake Maye plays the last two months of the season and he actually looks pretty damn good for the last month.
Marc Bertrand:
Then he gets to keep his job. It’s pretty simple.
Phil Perry:
I think that’s sort of what it’s going to come down to. I think it’s going to come down to what does the development look like for the young quarterback? What does the offense look like after Alex Van Pelt has had it for about a year and is Drake Maye progressing into year two. If he is, then you run it back.
