Patriots add offensive lineman and tight end to practice squad
The New England Patriots filled their two open practice squad spots on Wednesday, signing offensive lineman Jerome Carvin and tight end Jack Westover.
The New England Patriots’ practice squad is once again full after a pair of signings. On Wednesday afternoon, the team announced the additions of offensive lineman Jerome Carvin and tight end Jack Westover to the unit.
This signing kicks off what will be Carvin’s second stint with the Patriots. He signed with the team’s practice squad as part of the initial group after roster cuts, then released during Week 2. Carvin, 24, spent this past summer with the Chicago Bears before being released at the end of camp. He entered the NFL as a UDFA with the Kansas City Chiefs last year.
Over the past two preseasons Carvin has spent most of his time at center (while also playing some guard). Center depth is a need for the Patriots right now, with starter David Andrews expected to undergo shoulder surgery and be placed on IR. Nick Leverett filled in for Andrews at center after he got hurt in Sunday’s game, and prior to Carvin’s signing the only other center in the building for the Patriots was practice squad UDFA Bryan Hudson.
Westover, 25, is a rookie who spent the summer with the Seattle Seahawks after signing as a UDFA. He was released during final roster cuts. Last year at the University of Washington, Westover caught 46 passes for 433 yards and four touchdowns in 15 games.
With these signings the Patriots’ practice squad is now full at 16 players. The team does have one open roster spot, with another likely to open up soon when Andrews is placed on IR. Those spots could be earmarked for the three players who were designated to return from IR/PUP on Wednesday.
