Patriots offensive line takes most devastating blow yet
The Patriots offensive line situation is going from bad to worse, after the latest injury news.
Just when it couldn’t possibly get worse for a banged-up New England Patriots offensive line, they’ve now lost their leader.
Patriots starting center and team captain David Andrews has decided to undergo major surgery to repair a significant shoulder injury, as first reported by the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. He’s “likely” to be placed on “season-ending” injured reserve as a result.
Andrews had spent the beginning of the week seeking multiple opinions on his shoulder and mulling whether he could play through the injury. Mark Daniels of MassLive had previously reported that Andrews needed surgery, and it was only a matter of when he’d have it, now or after the season.

Undergoing surgery now gives Andrews a chance to be ready for the start of the 2025 season, if the 32-year-old decides to keep playing in the first place. But for 2024, the Patriots will have to soldier on with who they have on the offensive line. Per Mark Daniels, Andrews does want to play in 2025.
Andrews was originally expected to speak to the media on Wednesday in Foxboro. Defensive captain Deatrich Wise Jr. has replaced him on the schedule.
Andrews quickly exited the Patriots’ 30-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, leaving the Patriots to go with Nick Leverett at center. Leverett played 55 snaps and didn’t allow a pressure, according to Pro Football Focus, and earned a decent 66.0 run-blocking grade.
Leverett had issues snapping the ball cleanly in the preseason, and he’ll have a lot of responsibility on his shoulders to set the proper pass-rush protections up front. Despite a solid fill-in performance in San Francisco, it’s a question of getting better and staying consistent.

Even with similar on-field performance at center, Andrews is a massive loss for the Patriots off the field, as one of their longest-tenured players and most decorated captain. They also lost a significant leadership presence on defense, with the loss of Ja’Whaun Bentley to a pectoral injury.
The Pats currently have no other centers on the 53-man roster. On the practice squad, they have Liam Fornadel, who played a lot of center in training camp and the preseason, and Bryan Hudson, who signed with the Lions as an undrafted rookie then joined the Patriots in late August.
