Patriots host tackle, tight end for free-agent workouts
The New England Patriots have gone back to the free-agent well on the offensive line, but so far it’s just for a workout.
As first reported by Mike Reiss, the Pats brought in free-agent offensive lineman Jesse Davis for a visit. Davis, 33, most recently played for the Saints in the preseason, and played one regular season game for the San Francisco 49ers in 2023. He played two games at left tackle and one at right tackle for the Saints during the 2024 preseason (via Pro Football Focus).
Unlike the Patriots’ top free-agent signing of the off-season, Chukwuma Okorafor, Davis actually has left tackle experience in the NFL. He hasn’t played that spot in four years, but did play eight regular season games at left tackle from 2017-20. He hasn’t played on offense since 2021, when he played 15 games at right tackle and two games at left guard for the Miami Dolphins. But if he were to sign with the Patriots, considering the state of their beleaguered O-line, he’d be a candidate to play.

Still, as a left tackle option for the Patriots, Davis would be a long shot, even if he signed. But his actual, literal experience on the left side simply underlines the Pats’ lack of investment in players who have actually played the position. Depending on one of Okorafor and rookie third-round Caedan Wallace, who only played right tackle at Penn State, to figure out how to play left tackle for the first time in their careers was reckless and unnecessarily risky.
Now, due to injuries – and Okorafor straight-up leaving the team – the team was forced to play Demontrey Jacobs at left tackle against the 49ers last Sunday. And they should try to find help at that spot anywhere they can get it. At the very least, Davis could be a candidate to play right tackle, which would allow Mike Onwenu to shift back to his more natural and stronger position at right guard.
In addition to Davis, the Patriots also hosted tight end Tre’ McKitty for a free-agent workout. McKitty was originally a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft for the Chargers, and played 34 games (12 starts) in three seasons.

The Patriots have two open spots on their practice squad, after releasing wide receiver John Jiles on Monday. It remains to be seen whether Davis and/or McKitty take those places.
