Zolak & Bertrand: How far will the Bruins go for Jeremy Swayman?
On Monday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, the guys go back and forth on how far the Bruins will go for Jeremy Swayman.
Fighting over pocket change?
Marc Bertrand:
Cam Neely believes Jeremy Swayman is trying to reset the goalie market. Does reset the goalie market mean asking for the most? Because he didn’t say that. He said relative to his comp, relative to his peers, or however you want to put that. Resetting it literally means you’re getting the most ever. You’re getting over 10.5 MM a year.
Scott Zolak:
Yes, Patrick Mahomes. When he redoes his deal, resets the quarterback market.
Marc Bertrand:
Sergei Bobrovsky is at 10, Carey Price was 10.5 MM. Does that mean he is asking for 10.6? And if he is, then I’m kind of with Cam Neely. That’s a little crazy, but I don’t know if that’s the case. So now I wait for the response. Let’s hear the response. How far apart are they and how much more would you give to advance the conversation here? How much more would you give Jeremy Swayman on that eight-year deal? What’s the top dollar figure you would give him? Where would you go on this deal?
Scott Zolak:
For Swayman, I said it before when this all started, I said I’d go to 8.
Marc Bertrand:
I would go to 8.5 MM or 9 MM. Because I think he’s the latest guy to get a contract. They always go up a little bit and go a little bit further than you think it would go. So if it’s 9 million a year and you’re already at 8 and 8, what’s 8 and 9, it’s another 8 MM bucks over an 8-year period. That is pocket change. Guys, that is not worth the fight at this point.
