The Belichick Sweepstakes: Who Does Bill Coach Next Season?
Written by Joseph Medeiros
Coaching in the NFL Is like a revolving door, coaches that don’t perform get replaced and try to find success elsewhere. There have been many cases of coaches doing badly at one team and reinventing themselves on another team. The NFL season may have just begun but analysts are already breaking down the coaching carousel for next season, and a coach has managed to keep himself on the top of everyone’s mind as this next cycle approaches.
Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots were synonymous with one another for the last 20 years; however, their long relationship ended this offseason as Jerod Mayo became the latest Patriots head coach. Belichick’s availability on the market was thought to attract many suitors, but he could not secure any owner’s trust to lead their team. Belichick’s year off coaching has seen him take to the media to improve his image for this upcoming season. In another article, we spoke about the odds of who the first coach to be fired will be, with there possibly being many vacancies at the end of this season, who will Bill Belichick coach for Next season?
Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys were one of the destinations that many fans predicted that Bill would go to because of Jerry Jones. Jones has stated multiple times that he could see the two working together, where the Cowboys owner most likely seeks an experienced coach to hire. The Cowboys barely won a divisional matchup against the Giants 20-15 and looked the worst team at times, if not for Daniel Jones having a terrible night the Giants might have stolen one from the Cowboys. The next 3 games will be tough, with the Steelers, Lions, and Niners in back-to-back games. The Cowboys don’t look like a playoff team right now, which spells danger for Mike McCarthy who could see himself lose his job at the end of the season.
Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars find themselves in the worst spot in the NFL at 0-4 reflecting their on-the-field performance. The Jaguars once again gave hope to fans before snatching it away at the last moment; Trevor Lawerence played a clean game throwing for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns with 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter and it looked like the game was over as the Texans offense looked flat having punted 5 times in a row. In true Jaguars fashion, they would let CJ Stroud get the ball back with 2:46 remaining and go on a 69-yard drive, scoring with 18 seconds left in the quarter. Doug Pederson has yet to bring stability to a franchise in disarray, but there is some hope. Their next 3 games are against an injured Colts, the Bears, and the Patriots. A schedule perfect for bouncing back, it is possible but unlikely the Jaguars can dig themselves out of this one. Given the hands-off nature of their owner, Bill Belichick could find himself in Jacksonville if offered GM duties.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles are one of the more interesting teams on this list, as many of their main questions revolve around Sirianni. There is no possibility that Howie Roseman would leave the Eagles due to his consistent success, so Belichick would only come to the Eagles as a Head Coach. The Eagles went 11-6 last season but saw a massive drop off at the end of last season only winning 2 of their last 8 games. It was clear that their favoritism of the shotgun formation made them too predictable in the run game, if not for Jason Kelce the Tush Push would not be as effective as it was. The Eagles sit at 2-2 and couldn’t exercise their demon of the Buccaneers as they were blitzed by Baker Mayfield and the Bucs once again in a 33-16 game that saw Baker have 3 total touchdowns and 350 yards on a lackluster Eagles defense. If Sirianni is replaced during the upcoming offseason, their defense could certainly use a mastermind like Belichick.
New York Giants
The Giants hired a former Patriot in Brian Daboll in hopes the Belichick coaching tree could bear fruit, but as seen the Giants on-field results have been far from what the fans wanted. The Giants have one of the worst quarterback situations in football, they have a quarterback who is tied down by a 160-million-dollar contract but has 4 touchdowns and 3 interceptions through 4 weeks. Daniel Jones was the player many Giants fans pointed to for their close loss to the Cowboys, as he underthrew multiple passes that could have been big plays. The Giants are currently 1-3 and have looked uninspiring for most of the season, even in their win against the Browns it felt like they crawled to the finish line. Bill Belichick may have lost to the Giants twice in Super Bowls, but he still holds his 2 Superbowl wins as a Defensive Coordinator in high regard. Belichick has ties to the Giants organization which is why I can see them going to him if they decide to move on from Daboll.
