Patriots move cornerback to IR, make 3 other moves for 49ers game
The Patriots made a series of roster moves on both sides of the ball ahead of Sunday’s game against the 49ers.
The New England Patriots made their pregame roster moves ahead of a showdown with the San Francisco 49ers, including another player headed to injured reserve.
As the team announced Saturday, cornerback Alex Austin was placed on IR with an ankle injury. Austin, 23, played 14 defensive snaps and 20 special teams snaps over the first three games of the 2024 season.
To replace Austin on the cornerback depth chart, the Patriots have signed second-year pro Isaiah Bolden to the 53-man roster. The Pats originally drafted Bolden, 24, in the seventh round (245th overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Jackson State.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Bolden spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve after suffering a frightening injury during the preseason against the Packers, which caused the game to be suspended. Bolden announced in January that he’d been fully cleared to return for training camp.
New England released Bolden on Aug. 28, 2024 and signed him to the practice squad on Aug. 30, 2024. He played 67 defensive snaps in the 2024 preseason, mostly in the slot (40 snaps), but he also played 23 snaps out wide, two in the box, and two as a free safety (via Pro Football Focus).
The team made two roster elevations for Sunday, one on each side of the ball. Tight end Mitchell Wilcox and defensive tackle Trysten Hill were both elevated to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. This is Hill’s second elevation of the season, after playing seven defensive snaps in Week 1 against the Bengals. Wilcox, meanwhile, has a chance to play his first snaps as a Patriot, with 48 NFL games (nine starts) under his belt since 2021.

Austin was previously ruled out for Sunday’s game at Levi’s Stadium on the Friday injury report, along with tackle Vederian Lowe and guard Michael Jordan.
New England and San Francisco are scheduled to pick off at 4:05 p.m. ET on Sunday. The game will be broadcast on Fox, but the commentators will be Joe Davis and Greg Olsen, as opposed to Kevin Burkhardt and Tom Brady.
