Albert Breer: Alex Van Pelt’s offense is built to work for all quarterbacks
On Thursday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Albert Breer of SI and MMQB breaks down why Alex Van Pelt’s offense is built to work for all quarterbacks, including Drake Maye.
Respectfully, I disagree with Greg Bedard saying they’re not a match…
Albert Breer:
Knowing what I know about coaches who come out of that system, that offense is built to work for all quarterbacks, and that’s the strength of it. There’s so much flexibility within it that it can support a Brock Purdy in San Francisco as a rookie. It can also maximize an Aaron Rodgers as a 15, 16, 17-year vet in Green Bay. So, that’d be my first counter to it. My second counter to it, Joe Flacco, Deshaun Watson, PJ Walker, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, and Jeff Driscoll. What do all those guys have in common? They all started games for Alex Van Pelt last year. They all started games in that offense last year. Again, I think that’s a reflection of how that offense, when it’s run properly, it’s built to support any type of quarterback. The Shanahan iteration of that offense is less reliant on what type of quarterback you have. It’s more we’re going to build in something for you. In other words, like take Jared Goff, right when Jared Goff was in that system what’d you hear about? It was how Sean was in his headset and in his ear all the way down to the 15 second cutoff. That is just replacing the boards on the sideline… Again, this comes back to that line I gave you a couple of weeks ago. Don’t tell us how F’d up we are until we F it up. I think that’s what some of the staff took offense to with some of the criticism over the summer.
