Patriots sign wide receiver to fill final practice squad spot
The New England Patriots filled their final open practice squad spot on Tuesday, signing wide receiver John Jiles.
The New England Patriots have filled the final open spot on their practice squad. On Tuesday afternoon, the team announced the signing of wide receiver John Jiles to the practice squad.
Jiles, 24, is a rookie out of Division-II West Florida. Last fall Jiles set a school record with 1,255 receiving yards on 66 catches. He caught 16 touchdowns for the Argonauts.
He went undrafted this spring, and spent the summer with the New York Giants. In three preseason game Jiles caught two passes on seven targets for 41 yards. The Giants released Jiles during final roster cuts.
At 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, Jiles gives the Patriots another big-body receiver for their scout team. The Patriots have a number of teams ahead on the schedule with good size at wide receiver including the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans, and Los Angeles Rams.
With this signing the Patriots now have two wide receivers on their practice squad. Jiles joins Matt Landers, who was initially claimed off waivers late in training camp. The team also currently has six wide receivers on the active roster – and Kendrick Bourne will be eligible to return from PUP starting next week.
This is the second practice squad signing in as many days for the Patriots. They added offensive tackle Jalen McKenzie on Monday.
