Callahan on Drake Maye: This situation isn’t good for any QB
On Tuesday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Andrew Callahan describes a difficult developmental situation for Drake Maye.
Drake Maye in Tough Position
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Andrew Callahan: I lost my mind very briefly on television the night before I came in here in the morning and said, “I would put in Joe Milton before Drake Maye.” That’s not actually how I feel.
You can play Maye while also protecting his confidence. But what you’ll have to do is run a game plan so conservative that it’s counterproductive to your efforts to win. Then you’re caught in a situation where you could lose the locker room.
Now, they’re caught in the long-term vision where they’ll have five roster spots for guys who don’t even play because things will be better in 2025.
Hardy: Let me ask you something. What did you think when Drake Maye entered the game on Thursday night?
Callahan: I think he looked like a rookie.
Hardy: Just tell me what your original thought was the moment Maye got into the game.
Callahan: “Oh, gosh.”
Fred Toucher: Why do you think they did that?
Callahan: Because they thought it was a chance to get him game reps in a setting that they could control and protect.
Jon Wallach: But they couldn’t! They couldn’t do either of those things.
Callahan: I agree.
Toucher: I mean, they couldn’t keep his helmet on.
Wallach: I mean that was at the end of the game. How about the first or second play where he spun out of an ankle tackle and got his body slammed? That was right away. That wasn’t like, alright, let’s warm up.
Callahan: You know what was even faster than that? The near pick he threw. That very first play. And that’s what rookies do.
The most important thing is his confidence. He’s going to have to make mistakes and he’s going to get hit. I’m not saying make him the bubble boy and just put him in a corner for the rest of the season. What I’m saying is this, this situation is not fit for any quarterback, let alone a first-round rookie where you are banking on to return you to relevance over the next 10 years.
This is pressure on half of your dropbacks. I think it will get better, but it just got worse before it got better going from the Seahawks to the Jets.
